Has WNY or FLR ever considered running at the Genesee Valley Kart Club? Someone on NYSpeed just posted a picture of their Mini being run there and apparently the Mini dealer in Avon rents the place out once a year. It's about an hour and 20 minutes from WNY so maybe more of an FLR site. Below is a side by side comparing it to Batavia at 20 meter satellite resolution.

I was really curious how big that cart track was compared to Batavia so I pulled the two up in google maps, both at the same 50m scale, and put them together in photoshop.

Batavia Motorsports Park is on the right, the track at the lower left is the one in Elma. I don't think there's any way a car, even a formula car, is going to hit 60 mph there.

Had the corners mixed up. I'm definitely not lifting through the kink. Carrying 105-108 through 11 according to my buddy riding shotgun. That's up from mid 90's last time I was there. He also said 125 through the straight so the GPS on my phone might not be sampling often enough. Audio is pretty bad because I forgot to switch the GoPro from the waterproof case to the vented case.

Had a great time as always. Was hoping to see some SCCA people there... maybe next time. If anyone sees some good used race tires in 245/45/17 let me know. I'm starting to melt my street tires so stepping up to track tires is a must now.

Ha... I have to drive that thing home too ya know? Coming into the kink at 120 on street tires makes it tough to stay in the throttle. The car could probably do it but at that speed I seem to be hitting some sort of self preservation fear wall. :)

New springs all around since my last trip there and I'm not squatting the ass end and maxing the camber all the time now so that may help.

I threw this up on NYSpeed and never thought to include it here. Anyone looking for a boatload more seat time than autocross should check this out. Sure, no official timing and scoring but chasing someone down and forcing them to let you pass is just a good as beating them by a few tenths. :)

For those of you not familiar, Nelson Ledges Road Course has many open to the public track days throughout the year. The cost is $130 per driver and the track is about 3 hours from Buffalo. It's a pretty forgiving course in terms of runoff but it is a little bumpy. I went last year and can say despite the track map looking rather simple it's a pretty challenging course because of the higher speeds for several of the corners compared to say Dunnville or TMP.

The event I attended they broke into A and B groups, with A being well track prepped cars with experienced drives and B being everything else. I ran in B with my stock road tire equipped GTO and though I was passing a lot of people I never found the traffic restricting. There are two straights where passing is allowed so you're never behind someone for long. There were 6 official 20 minute sessions the day I went but I missed one because I had to run out for gas. There was also a final session where A and B mixed because so many people had gotten their fill but I found 5 20 minute sessions to be enough for me. What I'm saying is you'll get a lot of seat time for your $130.

I'm definitely going to the one on 5/12 and the weather looks to be perfect. Last time I left Williamsville around 6am and had more than enough time to get there and setup before the 9:30 drivers meeting. If anyone is interested in a caravan down there I'd be willing to meet up at the service exit just south of Buffalo on the 90.

If you've never done any sort of track driving this probably isn't the event for you though I'm sure the seasoned autocross guys would be fine. There is limited instruction available compared to some of the HPDE schools at places like Watkins Glen. I did their abbreviated Nelson School that they offer at the Fun Days since I had never run there and it was just you following the instructor for a lap then him following you for a lap and about 20 minutes of classroom time with some hints about different lines. Maybe it would have been more involved had the 2 of us in the school not been to other track days but I didn't get the feeling these were set up for a lot of hands on coaching.

They had no issues with taking a passenger as long as they had an approved helmet and had signed off on the waiver. There was no fee for bringing a spectator/passenger.

Not that it helps with the loss of the site, but regardless of ECC's new policies this probably would have been the last year to use the site anyway. I don't see how you could use the lot while keeping Tech Dr open from a safety perspective. Based on the Amherst board meeting notes about intersection improvements to the Main and Wherle ends of Tech Dr for the YMCA I doubt SCCA would be allowed to close the road down anymore.

A little OT, but hey Jim, did you check out that video he posted? I never thought of running an autocross like that before. Probably not ideal but with the loss of ECC-N it might open up some options for locations we never really thought of before.

Noticed in the meeting notes that ECC has denied access to the lot to all outside groups. Any reason why given? Really sad to see that site go.

Have any of you ever looked at NASA's vehicle classing system? Their's seems far superior to SCCA's. I'm guessing moving toward a system that doesn't force people with a few minor mods to jump into classes where the cars have every mod allowed by that class would do wonders for participation numbers. Pretty sure the guy who just posted with nothing but a tune will end up in SM going against some majorly prepped vehicles. Under NASA rules as long as his tune used 100% of the OEM ECU it's not even considered a mod.

Probably not a good sign that the address for the new YMCA is 150 Tech Dr, meaning the days of shutting down Tech Dr are probably over.

From the town board minutes:
" 9. That the petitioner bear all costs of improvements to Tech Drive including the intersections at Tech/Main and Tech/Wehrle; and that the petitioner agree to undertake some improvements to Tech Drive prior to final site plan approval"

Hey, speaking of classing. Where do I end up in the 05 GTO with just lowering springs? Running street tires as usual.
