ST next year
« on: October 01, 2009, 08:26:52 am »
Well, after driving Stephen's ST Civic at Nationals, I had to start looking around for one. Just bought this one

Now, if I can only figure out how to get it home...

You could always make Todd drive you down and drive it back.

Suddenly, staying in H-stock seems much more appealing.....:)        jeff w.  FLR hs22

I have an idea for combining all of the Street Touring classes in to one big indexed class. I would like to propose this to the Finger Lakes Region Solo board for the 2010 season and here are my thoughts.

Big classes are more fun. Anyone who has competed regularly in Road Tire will tell you that being in a big class with lot of people to compete with is more fun and more interesting then a small class.

Participation locally in the Street Touring classes is spotty at best. ST, STS, and STU all have an average of about 4 entries per event in 2009 FLR events. STX is higher with an average of almost 6 entries per event. All together the average comes out to about 17 entries. The addition of STR will probably take some time to catch on and I wouldn't expect to see a significant number of entries in 2010 or 2011. I would much rather compete in an indexed class of 17 drivers then compete in STS with 3-4 other drivers.

The impact on Registration and Timing & Scoring would very minimal, there would be about the same number of event and season trophies available to win, and the increased competition should lead to people pushing harder and upping their game every week in order to keep up with their rivals.

I'd like to know what other people think about this idea, especially those who compete in a Street Touring class, or are planning to in the near future.  Like, maybe if you just bought a nationally competitive ST car...

Ok, here's my take --

I can't find any reason that ST, STS, STX can't easily run as a class. Since STR hasn't existed before next year, I don't know how that shakes out. If you index the classes, what do you use for STR? If you don't index them, I think ST/STS/STX is OK on a local basis straight up. There would be some course dependencies once in a while, but there are always course dependencies.

I think that you either have to put all of them together, or not. That is, you can't offer a choice, or you'll end up with a huge mess.

I also wonder why you would stop at ST, why not one indexed class for stock, SP, etc.? There's always a fine line to walk between too many classes and too many people that want to win, but can't.

So, Cory, overall, I like the idea, but whether we do it, FLR does it, or nobody does it, I'm still coming for you next year. :D

Dale has a good point.  Let's say, hypothetically, you have a region that has a large number of people that will only compete in a class if they think they can win.  Now you just took them and moved them into one class where they are pretty sure they won't win.  We can't afford to have any smaller of a turnout than we have had at the last few events.

If you want a larger index class to compete against those with great driving skills, why not bring back the Pro class?

  ST (or whatever ST ends up in) is going to look quite different next year. Dale gets a competitive car - finally after putzing around in the ITR on street tires!

I could, if anyone cared enough.  Start a new thread if you really want, or continue here - it really doesn't matter to me.

BIG +1 for merging all of the ST classes if that will include STU.  All though the turnout for STU started growing towards the end of the year with Jim stealing peoples cars and those two new STI guys that came in late in the season.
